Got up at 6am today to drive down to the Keys. It was dark when we left, and as we drove we watched the sun rise. There was a deer grazing by the road, which was beautiful but also a bit disturbing as we drove past at 65 and it didn’t even flinch.
We drove the whole way through, only stopping for fuel & snacks. It’s something I can honestly say I didn’t expect. The sea just meets the edge almost flat even. There’s no dip, or bank, it’s just road, grass, sea. Then the land vanishes & you’re driving along a road built above the sea. Then land again. Over and over.
THEN once you get to the Keys, it’s like something out of a movie. All wooden coloured houses, picket fences and loved-up pensioners on mopeds. Tiny little streets everywhere with people driving all over the place with no warning, and cyclists with bread and other goodies in their baskets.
We took a wander down Duval Street earlier, it’s mad to know you’ve walked the entire width of the key in less than half an hour. We grabbed something to eat & then headed back to our hotel as Tony’s shattered from driving all day. That’s it so far. So far so good.
