Mould/Mold.
Mould on walls. There’s different types, but I had it due to bad air circulation, as I never had my vents open. Also, it didn’t help I never had my heating on, and the cold from the outside wall hitting my bedroom wall just made it worse. So here’s some tips I’ve learnt the hard way:
1. Bleach any mould you already have. There’s lots of other suggestions, such as soap & warm water, vinegar & water, but I prefer good old fashioned bleach. Whatever you do, get rid of it. It causes so many health conditions, asthma, allergies etc.
2. Let air in! Keep your vents open, open your windows as much as possible, even if it’s just a smidgen.
3. Double check it’s not rising damp or any other structural problem, if it is, wall insulation, paints, insulation boards are all things to consider. There’s loads of websites online for this, or you could contact an expert. I didn’t go with the paints, as they seem to just be a barrier rather then dealing with the actual problem. There’s fillers that can be inserted from the outside of the building to fill in any cracks in the wall to stop water seeping through, and there’s these polystyrene looking boards you can attach to the inside of your room which blocks out a lot of cold. Still thinking about this now.
4. If, like me, your room is on the ground floor and you live in an area you’d rather not leave your windows open, a dehumiifier is quite good. In the end I chose this option. I’m quite surprised how good it is though, and plus, it helps dry your clothes faster!
5. If you’re renting, speak to your landlord, it’s their responsibility to ensure you’re living in a safe environment.
